The cradle of new thinking
A 13-year-old girl was known by the world as Queen Christina of Sweden, who established the University of Helsinki. Originally, Helsinki University was a small and modest educational society where prospective members of the clergy and civil servants were taught Lutheran theology and European humanism. Later, they became the center of the Finnish national awakening. The university was the scene for the creation of the Finnish national anthem and flag, and we had a crucial role in building Finnish identity, history, language, and culture.
The University of Helsinki has played a key role in the development of the Finnish education system throughout history, cultural life, and the welfare state. Surprisingly, nine presidents and thousands of influential figures in the worlds of politics, scholarship, culture, and the business sector and four Nobel laureates studied at Helsinki University.
